Village description

It belonged to the giudicato of Torres, then it was conquered by Arborea; afterwards it went to the marquisate of Quirra which sold it back in 1839. The old town preserves a typical homely architecture, with whitewashing walls, small courtyards, outdoor stairs, arches and bowers. There are eleven churches, among them the ex parish church of Santa Maria and the new parish church of Sant' Ignazio next to the eighteenth-century boarding school of Jesuits. Oliena is mainly an agricultural and cattle-breeding village, famous for its wine, and for weaving embroidered shawls. From the inhabited area the forest of Monte Maccione can be reached by car, then a hiking path leads to the Supramonte overlooking the town with its highest peak Corrasi at 1463 meters on the sea level.
