Village description

The place where it's set makes of Macomer an important crossing point which divides North Sardinia from South. Its historical importance is demonstrated by the numerous monuments still rising in its territory, such as the nuraghe Ruggiu and the four-lobed nuraghe of Santa Barbara, the domus de janas of Filigosa, the Tumuli giants' tombs and baetyls. During Punic and Roman periods Macomer was called Marcopsissa and afterwards, in the Middle Ages it had a defense castle, by now destroyed. Its big land was the set of last battle between the Sardinian giudicati and the Iberian troops, where the giudicati were defeated. Today the town is an important center for cattle-breeding and dairying production. In the old town the quarter of Santa Croce still has Aragonese windows and portals, while in the parish church of San Pantaleo it is kept a wooden crucifix of 17th century.
